A pedestrian epiphany

zengarWhile walking around here, I've been seeing these things all over the place:
Off and on, I puzzled over what they were, as they obviously weren't structural or decorative. Therefor the must serve some form of function, but what? Today it suddenly came to me, they keep skateboarders and other such ilk from sliding along the edge and chipping their precious polished stone. Now the only question I'm left with is: why couldn't I have saved my inspiration for something that mattered?
