I just realized as I was returning to my apartment today that I am voluntarily living on the inside of a fence topped with razor wire. Now, the front of the building has nothing between it and the sidewalk but some landscaping, and the side has just a standard fence, but the back parking lot that my apartment abuts has this security feature more common to prisons and internment camps than domiciles. And thinking about that, I remembered encountering gated communities in my walks that had even more thourough setups. I can't help but wonder if the residents ever think in these terms, think of being walled in. Maybe they only think about it in terms of Wanko the sane's asylum, and do the complicated little Escher/origami bit with their minds so that the rest of the world is what's inside. More likely, they just don't think about it, but it's interesting to think about.
