I just realized that between car alarms, ambulances regularly using the street right outside on the way to the hospital, and the building fire alarm malfunctioning, (the smoke detectors all work fine, and have been tested regularly since the building wide system started going off randomly) I may have not even noticed the last time the building alarm went off. While the other sources have certainly contributed, I think I have to lay the blame for this desensitization squarely on the car alarms, though. Car alarms have no specific sound to them, go off randomly anytime and anywhere, and there's not a damned thing that I'm supposed to (or even can) do about them since they are usually a block over, or otherwise out of sight.
Oh well, at least now that I realize I've reached the saturation point for sirens, I can try to direct my conscious attention to them even if they no longer put my subconscious on alert.
