My take on the current angst.
Jan. 6th, 2009 12:23 pmOkay people, calm down. The only things likely to bring about the end of Livejournal would be a mass exodus of users or a significant hike in bandwidth/site hosting costs. These are the layoffs that have been coming since the company was sold, and either there was language in the sale contract that kept them from being laid off until now, or they were being given time to either prove they were not redundant or move to another position within the new company. I'll admit that I wasn't expecting this either, since the San Francisco office was hiring as little as three months ago, but I can't say that I'm surprised.
If you want a real indicator of Livejournal's health, keep an eye on the ScrapBook feature. That's just about the only thing here other than the icons that isn't stored and transmitted as text, and thus just about their biggest storage/bandwidth usage. Well, I suppose some of the more complex themes might also count, so also look for being restricted to more basic ones. I mean, we may suffer the loss of new features (Oh No!) and maintenance may cease to be a priority, but I expect the actual site to still be here for a long time to come.
And in case anyone cares, the only thing I'd actually miss if this did go away is my friends list, so I'll be setting up an insanejournal account as backup since that seems to be where most of them are saying they would go. As I said, I expect it to sit empty for quite some time, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
Edit: this time there isn't a spanish language journal with two posts over three years sitting on the "zengar" spelling, so I'm using that.
